KLIBOR's joke

Assalamualaikum wbt

Learning about interest rate is amazing. There are various terms used in the interest rate structure which are Deposit Rates, Interbank Rates, Statutory Costs, Overhead Costs, Base Landing Rate (BLR), Spread and Effective Lending Rate (ELR).

To me, the most attractive rate is interbank rates- Kuala Lumpur Interbank Offer Rate (KLIBOR). I got a joke about this rate...

Actually they want to name it MIBOR for Malaysian Interbank Offer Rate, but a Chinese chap in the committee pointed out that "Bor" in Hokkien means "wife". Therefore, MIBOR could imply "my wife". As they do not wanting to give the impression that wives are traded in the Malaysian interbank money market, they decided on the term KLIBOR.

What a funny joke which I never think about before. I got this story from my Notes to The Prime Minister written by Wong Sulong. We'll never get this from the textbook...trust me~

Item 'TIDAK BERGUNA'

Assalamualaikum w.b.t

Post kali ini saya ingin tujukan khas kepada Kak Yaya dan Abg TG yang bakal menimang cahaya mata September ini InsyaAllah. Juga buat rakan2 yang sudi mengambil manfaat.

Ibu bapa bijak, anak mewah. Honestly speaking saya belum baca lagi buku ni tapi sempatlah intai2 masa mak tengah baca. Saya merekodkan segala perbelanjaan tanpa menetapkan kelas setiap item. Sebagai contoh:

setiap hari saya akan catatkan;

12 hb Julai
Jam tangan- RM60.00
Makan t/hari- RM3.00
Kasut sukan- RM15.00

sepatutnya saya perlu kelaskan begini;

12 hb Julai
Jam tangan- RM60.00 [TB]
Makan t/hari- RM3.00 [KP]
Kasut sukan- RM15.00 [KP]

*TB: Tidak Berguna
*KP: Keperluan Penting

The Merchant of Venice: Brief Summary

Original by; William Shakespeare

Bassanio a gentleman of Venice requires 3000 ducats to pay for his travel expenses to Belmont. Bassanio wishes the money as he is seeking to wed the Heiress Portia. Bassanio turns to his good friend Antonio, who is a wealthy merchant.

Unfortunately, Antonio's money is tied up on Ships doing business. He, however has offered to be Guarantor, they attempt to borrow money from a wealthy Jew, Shylock. Shylock reluctantly agrees, but on the condition that if he doesn't pay the 3000 Ducats by three months than, Antonio has to give up a pound of his flesh, closest to the heart. They agree to the Bond.

Portia, in her home at Belmont has been visited by many suitors. From her dead fathers wishes her suitors were required to choose between a lead, silver, or a gold casket. The one who chooses the casket containing her portrait, would be her husband. No man has yet chosen the correct casket.

Jessica, the daughter of Shylock wishes to change into Christianity, against her father's will and marry the Christian Lorenzo. She runs away with him, and takes some of her father's fortune. Shylock is furious and vows revenge.

Bassanio with friend Gratiano travel to Belmont to, Portia is delighted to hear this, as he is the one she wants to marry. Before hand the prince of Morocco and the prince of Aragon had tried but failed to choose the correct casket. Bassanio takes his time in choosing the casket - he chooses the lead casket; the correct one. Gratiano, woes Nerissa, and the four prepare to be wed.

Bassanio's friends arrive with a messenger, he receives a letter from Venice, it said that Antonio's ship had not yet arrived and Shylock was demanding his pound of flesh, as the money had not been paid. Bassanio is extremely upset about this news. Portia reassures him and offers to pay any amount possible or do anything she can. The men set off back to Venice.

Portia along with Nerrissa conduct a plan to help Antonio, they tell Lorenzo and Jessica to mind the house while they wait for their husbands in a monastery. They plan to dress up as Lawyers in order to defend Antonio in court.

The two women enter the courtroom with a message that the doctor Balthasar (Portia) has being sent to replace the original doctor, Bellario. Portia begins her case with a plea for mercy, she begs him to forfeit the bond and accept three times the amount. Shylock refuses, as he wants to take his revenge on the Christains who have criticized him because he is a Jew.

Shylock:
Most learnèd judge, a sentence! Come prepare!

Portia:
Tarry a little, there is something else.
This bond doth give thee here no jot of blood;
The words expressly are "a pound of flesh."

The Merchant Of Venice Act 4, scene 1, 304–307

Portia then reads the bond and discovers that Shylock is only allowed to take one pound of Antonio's flesh. She tells him that he can take his pound of flesh on the condition that he takes exactly one pound of flesh and only flesh. No blood shall be shed. Shylock is forced to forfeit the bond, if he does go outside the conditions than he too will be punished. Since he forfeited the bond, but threatened the life on a Venetian, Shylock was forced to give up his money, half to Antonio the other half to the general state. Antonio takes pity on the Jew and declines his half of the money, he tells the court that Shylock can keep his money, but on the condition that he change into Christianity and leave his money to his daughter on his death. The Jew painfully agrees.

The men gratefully thank doctor Balthasar and her clerk, they offer them anything they desire. Portia and Nerissa both ask for Bassanio's and gratiano's rings. Reluctantly they hand it to them, as it was a present from their wives who told them never to lose it.

Portia and Nerissa return home, soon after Bassanio, Antonio, and Gratiano return with the good news. Portia and Nerrissa demand to know what happened to the rings, the men apologized and explained the situation. Portia and Nerissa show them the rings and explain that they were the two doctors.

Development and Economic Model

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the one who open the country to foreign investment and reformed taxation. He had reduced the trade barriers and created world-class physical infrastructure. Became the nation's first Prime Minister that come from a modest social background, he formulated the Second Outline Perspective Plant (OPP2). Introduced New Development Policy (NDP) for the year 1991-2000, he also unveiled vision 2020 in 1991, the blueprint for Malaysia's journey to becoming a developed economy and a mature democracy by the year 2020.

During his time, Tun Mahathir work on various large scale national projects such as the North-South Expressway, Multimedia Super Corridor, capital city of Putrajaya, Johor's Port of Tanjung Pelepas, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the Bakun Dam in Sarawak, and the Petronas Towers. However, these development projects made the growth of Malaysia's economy decreased tremendously. The inefficient and failures of some of his projects has also been criticised. A very low Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Malaysia per capita (US$7,468) compared to South Korea (US$16,450), Singapore (US$34,346) and Hong Kong (US$29,559) had attracted the United National Development Programme (UNDP) to talk about the country. The UNDP then suggested the government to work on new plan for the economic model, quoted as New Economic Model (NEM).

Today, the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak makes the model become a reality. Recently launched on March 30, NEM has its own target to propel from its current GDP from US$7,000 to at least US$15,000 in ten years. However, this third leg of Malaysia's reinvention, after 1 Malaysia and Government Transformation Programme has conducted to new conflicts and debated by many economic experts.

Besides of being a small economy, Malaysia has been susceptible to the positive and negative forces of globalisation. Based on economic crisis nowadays, does the policies introduced by the government are the best solution. Whether it will cure the disease or be a disaster to the nation, nobody knows. Tun Mahathir was recently mentioned that he has no confidence on the achievement to vision 2020. Of course it is hard to make others' idea become a reality but it is not impossible to be achieved.
